Depression
Read outDepression is a complex mental health condition wherein symptoms include feelings of sadness that persist, loss of interest in things once enjoyed, and a sense of hopelessness about the world.
On top of that – its likely that when we are depressed a lot of our energy goes toward trying to manage the stress around being depressed. This can lower our felt energy reserves – energy that we might otherwise use to relax, to seek pleasure, or to gain comfort. Our ability to relax thus declines further; our concentration, decision-making, appetite, sleep habits and other indicators of health may follow suit.
We may even view our depression as ‘anger turned inward’ – in fact, a trauma-informed perspective of depression could be that something important or relevant has for a while now, literally been ‘depressed’, avoided or denied in our mind and body owing to what were at some point, valid reasons, but may not be now. As the avoidance continues, so may the depressive symptoms – unless the parts of us that have been cut off are slowly, surely and safely brought back into the light of our consciousness.
